Sky Ferreira
Ferreira is emerging into the music world in her own right, yet is also no stranger to the spotlight. While she’s been known in recent years as an actress and model, she’s been recording music from the age of 14 with early encouragement from Michael Jackson, then a client of her stylist grandmother.
After some false starts, record label squabbles and a well-publicized drug bust with a musician boyfriend last fall, 2014 is shaping up to be her year. Along with the aforementioned Miley Cyrus tour, Ferreira and her team at CAA, led by agent Bobby Cory, is lining up festival gigs including Field Day at London’s Victoria Park in June.
She’s had some moderate success with single releases in 2011, but scored a hit in 2013 with the track “Everything Is Embarrassing.” She released her debut long-player Night Time, My Time in September, which spawned another single, “You’re Not the One.”
The album landed Ferreira on numerous year-end “best of” and “artist to watch” lists. She made the rounds of late-night TV, displaying a voice and songwriting knack of an artist beyond her 21 years and previous synth-pop efforts.
Moving into a more indie-pop vein, her work has become grittier and more grown up – which makes her a great touring foil for her friend Cyrus.
And she’s hardly been the pampered pop star in waiting – she was busted for drug possession and resisting arrest in September, reportedly bailing out with a credit card. She also canceled a series of opening dates with Vampire Weekend owing to what was described as a misdiagnosed vocal cord hemorrhage.
But those highly publicized events didn’t appear to hurt her rising profile – she’s been named a spokeswoman for Redken hair products in addition to being added to the Bangerz tour, and continues to add high-profile appearances worldwide in the new year.
