Journalist Seo Byung-hoo Dies

Noted Korean music journalist Seo Byung-hoo died Feb. 1 after battling cancer for a number of years.

Seo was a founding member of the Korean Popular Music Critics Association, and was considered the first columnist in South Korea to exclusively cover the pop music scene.

He was also a judge for the MBC College Music Festival in the 1980s.

Since 1988, he worked for the Joongang Daily, and lived with his family in the United States in the late ’80s and ’90s.

More relevantly for younger people, Seo is also the father of Seo Jung-kwon, better known as Tiger JK and the founding member of Korea’s first hip-hop group, Drunken Tiger, which debuted in Los Angeles where he was living at the time.

The younger Seo also founded and remains the CEO of Jungle Entertainment, a label distributed by the entertainment giant CJ E&M.
