A band spokesman apologised to anyone whose evening was spoiled.

The Daily Mirror found a fan who said it was so loud it “altered heart rhythms” and another who complained “the bass crashed into you like a steam train.”

The Daily Mail said about 30 fans walked out because the music was so loud it made their ears bleed.

One fan said deafening renditions of hits including “Red, Red Wine” and “Can’t Help Falling In Love” left her in physical pain.

A Cambridge Corn Exchange spokesman was widely quoted as saying the venue always worked within strict health and safety guidelines and ear plugs are readily available.

According to the local Cambridge Evening News, the health and safety law at the venue states the continuous sound level should not exceed 107 dB, with the peak sound pressure level not exceeding 140 dB.

The remaining six UB40 members continue to tour and record with original frontman Ali Campbell’s brother Duncan on vocals. It was this version that played the Cambridge gig.
