Red Rocks’ EDM Issue

Officials in Morrison are scheduled to meet with members of the Jefferson County commission to discuss ways to curb the noise from EDM shows after complaints from locals began rolling in, according to the Denver Post.

In letters to the county, neighbors reportedly claimed wearing earplugs and retreating to the basement are ineffective techniques for dealing with the sonic pummeling of some Red Rocks shows. One was quoted explaining the noise made his family “like prisoners in our own house,” the Post said.

“It’s like Guantanamo — with loud, thumping music and sleep deprivation,” the resident wrote.

Town officials have asked the county to help resolve the issue, as “unacceptable sound levels and extended concert hours risk becoming a public or private nuisance.”

The city and county of Denver, which own Red Rocks, set new sound limits and curfews for concerts at the beginning of the year after receiving complaints.

Artists that violate the new rules can face fines from $5,000 to $10,000.

A representative for Denver Arts & Venues told the Post Red Rocks operators plan to monitor whether the new sound rules help alleviate some of the noise issues for nearby residents, adding, “We are always evaluating the venue to make it the best experience for patrons, as well as neighbors.”

Upcoming EDM concerts include Global Dub Festival, Bassnectar, and Skrillex.
