Industry Noize: Minneapolis Armory Renovations

A historic Minneapolis building that’s been home to an NBA team, concerts and even the National Guard in the past could be up for a major conversion.

The Armory now serves as a parking lot downtown, but a development group has plans to turn the building back into an event venue as part of a downtown revitalization project that includes the construction of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings’ new stadium.

Armory Development II plans to use the building primarily for live music, but it could also host athletics and private events, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

The group reportedly submitted initial plans for the building that the National Park Service approved last summer, and more detailed plans await approval before construction could begin.

Armory Development manager Doug Hoskin, told the Tribune the venue could be completed by May 2015 and would hold about 6,000 people, filling a niche in the market. The closest venue near that size is the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul.
