The BBC said one of the stabbed men is still critically ill in Salford’s Royal Hospital. Detective Inspector Mark Tootill said the injured man may have been treated soon after the attack by two off-duty medical staff, who administered CPR before he was taken to the medical tent by security.

“We are extremely keen to speak to those two people, or anyone else who believe they may have seen the attack take place,” he said.

BBC Manchester quoted a police spokesman saying there had been “several other assaults,” but local Chief Inspector Gary Simpson said they were “isolated incidents.” Police reportedly made 10 arrests over the course of the weekend.

In another incident, the Manchester Evening News said festivalgoers claimed a stampede developed at a bus station as thousands of people surged toward buses to take them away from the north Manchester site.

Parklife Weekender had begun with more of a natural disaster as heavy rain over Manchester caused the opening of the event to be delayed as organisers cleared away surface water.

As many as 5,000 people queued in the rain for half an hour, while the safety work was taking place.

The organisers tweeted: “Best to wear wellies.”

“This is Manchester. A little bit of rain never stopped us from knowing how to party,” it said.
