Segal Feted

Joe Segal, jazz impresario and owner of longtime Chicago club Jazz Showcase, has been bestowed with the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Fellowship, the nation’s highest jazz honor.

Segal joins musicians Carla BleyGeorge Coleman and Charles Lloyd in the honor.

Each will receive a $25,000 fellowship.

The will be honored at an awards ceremony at  in New York in April. Segal has been presenting jazz in the Windy City since 1947, according to the Chicago Tribune.

“I wish my mother was around to see it,” Segal told the paper. “She would have been very proud. She never really did figure out what I did for a living.”
