Pay Per View Concerts
CTR’s survey received 4,338 valid responses, 19 percent of which indicated that they would pay to watch concerts online, according to Xinhua news service.
Though the portion isn’t particularly high, it’s notable that only 32 percent said they would not pay for any sort of video content online.
As if to prove the viability of streamed concerts, local rock star Wang Feng hosted a paid live webscast of his concert at the national stadium in Beijing on Aug. 2 through online video provider LeTV.com, which set a “ticket” price of 30 yuan ($4.90) per “viewer” and managed to attract 75,000 paid accesses to the live webcast and its follow-up full-length replay.
Both the artist and the service provider pointed to the results as proof that live webcasts hold great potential for China’s music industry.
The survey also found that these potential concert viewers are on the whole younger and more educated than the average Internet user. Most also live in China’s more industrialized eastern and southern regions.
