The China Music Business website estimates that as a result, Swift’s music is only available to “less than 1 percent of the digital music audience” in China, owing to the fact that premium subscriptions are “negligible” in the country.
Wang Hao, the CEO of Xiami, Alibaba’s music streaming service, told local media that he thinks it’s a “stupid move” on Swift’s part.
“It’s also ungrateful,” he told CMB. “She used the Internet to generate hype, then cut the Internet out. We don’t believe this move will bring many subscribers, that’s just wishful thinking on the part of the rights holder.”
