Although cause of death was unknown at press time, Golub had suffered a series of setbacks. He lost his eyesight because of a collapse of an optic nerve and was diagnosed with a rare, incurable brain disorder.

In the interim, he fell onto a subway track in New York City and was dragged by a train before being rescued by onlookers, according to JazzTimes.

Golub, who played his first gig in 1967 at age 12, has more than a dozen albums to his name.
