Herb Alpert Is ‘In The Mood’
One of music’s most accomplished musicians, Alpert’s Tijuana Brass was a regular chart climber during the 1960s with hits such as “The Lonely Bull” and “Spanish Flea.” What’s more, Alpert and the Tijuana Brass even stirred up a little controversy with the group’s 1965 album cover for Whipped Cream & Other Delights, which showed a model apparently wearing nothing but the dairy product mentioned in the title. In reality the model was wearing a white blanket that also included dabs of shaving cream, but it was still considered somewhat risqué.
A nine-time Grammy winner and a 2013 recipient of the National Medal of Arts, Alpert also ran a record label, having co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss.
Alpert is touring in support of his In The Mood album which features the vocals of his wife, singer Lani Hall, who will also accompany him on tour. Hall’s career took off when she sang in Sergio Mendes’ Brasil 66.
“Making music is a natural thing for me to do,” Alpert said. “I love melodies from standards and I try to present them in a different way that hasn’t been heard before.”
With that in mind Alpert chose Glen Miller’s “Chattanooga Choo Choo for the album’s opener and closes the disc with “America The Beautiful.”
