Atlanta Seeks Civic Center Buyer

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is exploring a way to sell the city’s Civic Center outside of an auction already under way.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that bids on the 20-acre property were below what city leaders hoped to make off a sale.

Reed said Jan. 30 he’s been approached by an unnamed investment group willing to pay a higher price for the 4,650-capacity performing arts center.

City attorneys are trying to determine whether the sale can be made. Reed said he believes the public would want him to sell for the maximum value possible.

The mayor said it may also be possible to rebid the project. One city councilman told the paper that city leaders believe the property is worth at least $40 million.

However, a 2012 study of the property projected it would lose $400,000 annually through 2017 unless the arts venue could be released to the private sector. The property is also said to be eyed as a prime redevelopment area.

Among artists to perform at the center are Eric BenetKatt Williams, and Maze feat. Frankie Beverly
