Student Dies In Arena Roof Fall

William Meckling, of Centennial, Colo., climbed on the South Bend, Ind., arena’s roof, which was still wet from rain, early in the morning with a group of students.

He fell shortly before 3:45 a.m. and was unresponsive when found by first responders. He was pronounced dead at a hospital despite efforts to resuscitate him.

Notre Dame President the Rev. John Jenkins said “it is a profound sadness … to lose someone so young and brimming with promise.”

Meckling was to have graduated the next day.
