He was GM and 25-percent shareholder of Rhythm Group, which set it up in 2011 as a sister event to its 13-year-old Rhythm and Vines in Gisborne, North Island. According to published reports, Rhythm and Alps lost “hundreds and thousands of dollars” in 2014 after it only drew 5,000 – half the crowd number of the first event.

This was partly due to bad weather, and operational problems in 2013 that caused long queues and customer dissatisfaction.

Bull is sole owner of Rhythm and Alps through his company Bench Music. This year’s event, Dec 30-31 in Wanaka’s Cardrona Valley, will announce a bill of international and NZ acts in July. Some acts will be shared with Rhythm and Vines, which continues to be run by Rhythm Group.

This year it runs Dec. 29 to Jan. 1, with a traditional draw of 15,000.
