PRS Extends Consultation Period

The UK’s PRS For Music has extended the consultation period for reviewing the way it licenses ticketed live music events, allowing industry groups such as the Concert Promoters’ Association more time to respond.

The original period announced April 13 was due to end June 8, but will now continue to Sept. 30. The extension has been granted following the CPA, which has 45 members and 14 associate members, expressing an interest in conducting its own research.

The extension is also supported by other industry bodies including the Association of Independent Festivals, Association of Festival Organisers, British Association of Concert Halls, Music Venues Trust, National Arenas Association, National Open Air Events Association, and Society of London Theatre/UK Theatre. PRS is reviewing the way it licenses and charges ticketed live music events, including examining potential new revenue streams such as a share of ticket booking fees, concessions and secondary ticketing.

The standard tariff, also known as the Light and Popular tariff, has stood at 3 percent of gross ticket revenue since 1988. PRS previously launched a review into the way it licenses live music in 2010, but the live music sector’s widespread opposition to a potential increase to the tariff led to it keeping it at three percent.
