Hendrix Returns To IOW

Forty-five years after his landmark performance at the UK’s Isle Of Wight Festival, Jimi Hendrix returned to the scene of his great triumph June 13. In fact there were several thousand Jimis among the 50,000-strong crowd.

Festival chief John Giddings hosted a world record attempt for the most people wearing the same masks at the same time, and a tribute to Hendrix’s last performance in the UK.

The masks cost £1 each and the money raised went to WellChild, a charity that helps seriously ill children and their families.

“It has been an incredible weekend,” Giddings told Pollstar. “Having Fleetwood Mac close the festival was a dream come true, and we saw some fantastic performances over the weekend – BlurThe ProdigyThe Black KeysPaolo Nutini to name a few.

“The atmosphere all weekend was great, everyone was having a good time, I am very happy indeed.”

The other acts playing IOW June 11-14 included Pharrell WilliamsJames BayYou Me At SixFirst Aid Kit, and Counting Crows.
