Banks

Some artists like to lay it all out there on social media. For others, maintaining an aura of mystery can be just as appealing.

Banks first gained attention when songs she’d posted on SoundCloud started generating a buzz in the industry. At the time, the California singer/songwriter was relatively unknown but word traveled fast.

WME’s Kirk Sommer, who reps Banks along with Sam Kirby and David Levy, told Pollstar the team came aboard early after hearing, and loving, her music.

“We met with management on Valentine’s Day 2013 which was kind of fitting as we were exposed to some great music online and fell in love,” Sommer said.

Banks began releasing EPs that year and opened for The Weeknd in the fall. Festivals and club dates in the U.S. and abroad followed in 2014, along with the release of her debut album, Goddess, which Rolling Stone has described as featuring a “beguiling, diaristic voice that echoes avant-pop forebears (Aaliyah, Fiona Apple, Kate Bush) and a taste for gloomy, synth-centric productions.”

Sommer explained that while there’s been a ton of interest in Banks, the team has opted to take things slow in developing her touring career, committing to “a very organic and strategic build.”

“Banks is a truly a global artist,” he said. “There is a lot of interest in her around the world including Asia. We’ve collectively decided to be very selective about what we do at this formative stage and plan on covering more territories on the next album campaign.”

Banks heads out for more dates with The Weeknd and festivals during fall.
