Thompson’s career spans more than 40 years, but the Richmond, Va. resident cut down on touring in recent years, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger.

Thompson joined Springsteen’s pre-E Street band, Steel Mill, as lead singer in 1971. Steel Mill once recorded a three-song demo for Bill Graham and then rejected a recording contract that Graham offered.

Thompson was VP and co-founder of In Your Ear Music and Recording Corp and had released several solo albums, according to the Star-Ledger.
