Femi Kuti Importing Positive Performances

The first show, the only performance scheduled for the West Coast, is the High Sierra Music Festival July 3 in Quincy, Calif. Afterwards the tour moves through the South, Midwest, and Northeast, ending up at Floydfest in Floyd, Va., July 30. A good number of dates on the schedule are festivals, so concertgoers should have the opportunity to get a full day of music if they decide to go out and see Femi.

Kuti incorporates many influences into his sound and though he comes from musical royalty – being the son of African musical legend Fela Kuti – he has developed a sound that is his own and has built a following around the world.

Like his father, who was known for attempting to run for President of Nigeria, and his grandmother, who led the women’s rights movement in Nigeria, Femi’s work strongly incorporates social and political commentary, albeit without many of the associated controversies of Fela. Femi Kuti is currently serving as an Ambassador for Amnesty international and has been openly critical of political corruption in Nigeria.
