Fort Wayne Approves Arena

Fort Wayne, Ind., may get a mid-sized downtown arena next to the  convention hall after a unanimous recommendation by a committee appointed by Mayor Tom Henry to consider the matter.

The arena would be used for concerts, sports and other events needing a capacity of 5,000 to 6,000 seats, which no other venue in the area accommodates.

Costs are estimated between $48 million and $68 million and funding options need to be explored. Committee chairman Chuck Surack said the new arena could be a catalyst for downtown development and an architectural and engineering firm should be hired soon to evaluate the project.
