Mexican Festival Forced To Move
Mayan Madness Electronic Music Festival was forced to move from its original site in Tulum to Playa del Carmen in Mexico March 26 because the private facility that hosted it the last two years lacked proper permits.
Guillermo Haro Bélchez, an attorney for the country’s environmental protection department, said the venue would be temporarily closed until permitting issues regarding fixed and semi-fixed structure installation was addressed.
According to Riviera Maya News, federal authorities inspected the Tulum facility where they found structures for the festival already placed in the natural protected area of Tulum National Park.
The country’s National Protected Areas commission and the National Institute of Anthropology and History have reportedly filed a criminal complaint for damage to the area with the Tulum National Park, according to Mexico News Daily.
The event was instead moved to Playa Mamitas in Playa del Carmen, northwest of Cozumel on Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Promoted as a “spring break” party, the festival was headlined by Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, W&W, Mattn, and Sander van Doorn.
