Costello’s “Detour” tour is different from his work with his band The Attractions, in that the shows are just him onstage with a guitar and a piano.
The show pulls from Costello’s extensive catalogue and allows the performer plenty of room to improvise or riff on a particular story or song. Reviews of his “Detour” have said the show seamlessly incoporates tales from his recent memoir “Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink,” along with appropriate visual images projected.
The ever-spectacled Costello no doubt has all kinds of interesting stories as he has been a presence in music since his debut album was released in 1977. It was that year when he famously got himself banned from “Saturday Night Live” for playing “Radio Radio,” a critique of popular radio and the music industry that the show’s producers had warned him to forgo.
