Congo Musician Accused Of Assault Is Provisionally Released
Authorities in Congo have provisionally released a popular musician detained after being accused of assaulting a female member of his band.
Rumba musician Koffi Olomide said on his Twitter page Saturday that he has been released and is at home with family. He thanked those who supported him. His lawyer Tony Mwaba Kazadi confirmed the development.
Olomide was jailed Tuesday on a charge of intentional assault and he awaits a hearing.
Footage posted on social media last week showed Olomide kicking a female dancer at the airport in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. Many Kenyans called for his arrest. Kenya deported him Saturday.

Olomide, who has toured in Africa and Europe, is popular for a style of music called “soukous” in which dancers rhythmically shake their hips.
