Gabriella Cohen Takes On The U.S.

Australian songstress Gabriella Cohen has a new album and music video to brag about, along with her debut North American tour. The brief outing kicks off in Los Angeles in November.

Cohen signed to Dot Dash / Remote Control Records earlier this year after releasing her debut album, Full Closure and No Details, through her own independent label, Dirty Power Studios, in March. The singer – who was previously known in the Aussie music scene as one half of the duo The Furrs – co-produced the LP with guitarist and engineer Kate “Babyshakes” Dillon.

NME caught Cohen’s live show during 2015’s BigSound festival.

The magazine’s Matt Wilkinson writes, “The best bit comes when she and lead guitarist Kate Dillon bop around the tiny stage, staring the audience out and knocking into each during a blissed out song called ‘Sever The Walls.’ Unlike so many BigSound acts, they don’t seem to be playing for cool points, and their onstage demeanour reminds me of The Libertines in 2002 before they got big. It’s almost as if they’re performing in a glass house, and if you happen to be looking in, then fine. If not – fuck you.”

He adds, “Musically, there’s bits of Mazzy Star, Nick Cave and the Velvet Underground to devour, as well as an amazing pop song about Saturday nights/Sunday mornings called ‘I Don’t Feel So Alive.’”

This week Cohen released the video for the track “Downtown.”

Earlier this month Beats 1 DJ Matt Wilkinson showed off some new material from Cohen – a demo for a tune called “I’m Miserable Baby.” Take a listen while you peruse her upcoming tour schedule.
