A court ruled that U2 members Bono and Larry Mullen Jr. falsely accused Brazilian concert promoter Franco Bruni of failing to pay their fees for three concerts in Rio and Sao Paolo.

The gigs were part of U2’s Pop Mart tour in the late ’90s, and earned the band around $8 million, according to The Irish Sun.
In a 2000 interview with Bono and Mullen, the drummer claimed that Bruni hadn’t paid them properly for the shows. A couple of days after the interview, then manager Sheila Roche had clarified that Mullen had been mistaken.
Still, Bruni proceeded to launch a civil lawsuit against both men in 2003, claiming they damaged his reputation. A first verdict was reached in 2011, when Mullen had to pay euro 228,000.
The subsequent appeal has only now been settled, with Bono and Mullen ordered to pay the equivalent of about $1.5 million to Bruni for “moral and material damage,” according to Jusbrazil.
