The plan is to create a canvas that can be spanned over the ancient ampthitheatre when it rains, and retracted again with minimal visibility.

The euro 13.5 million project could be completed within three years if approved by the cultural ministry and monument protection authorities in Rome.

Verona Arena is almost 2,000 years old, and the biggest threat to the structure is rain, the city’s Mayor, Flavio Tosi, said in a press conference.

The convertible membrane structure would involve new supporting framework that could be used for additional lighting and improved stage machinery.
