Emails From The Lone Star State
Trakksounds, real name Garrett Brown, wanted to book a show for an artist he recorded, Starlito & Don Trip, which recently was a part of a collaborative single with Scarface and Kam Franklin, “Once Upon A Time.” Sara Fitzgerald, who’s owned the 750-capacity club since 1977, took exception in an email and quoted words from a video by Starlito & Don.
“I’m gonna pass on this. Not a big fan of the ‘N-[redacted], bitch, pussy, whore, gonnafuckingshootyou’ music or the fans that wear their pants under their ass with their underwear showing …”
The email continued regarding getting attitude from patrons for asking them to “take their lit joint outside” as they “buy little, tip little and create big disharmony – no thanks.”
Brown responded, in part, with, “Wow .. A simple no would have worked as well. … Have a good week and god bless you.”
The exchange, after it was shared with the public, developed into threats of boycotts and Hannibal Buress tweeting, “Yeesh. Just worked at this spot on Friday. Never again though.”
Sara Fitzgerald told Pollstar she had been fielding phone calls all day when contacted.
“Racism has never been in my cards,” Fitzgerald said. “The funny thing is the ‘right wing’ is now calling me, making me their darling and I’m not in that camp at all. It’s really an interesting turn of events.
“I’m walking delicately these days,” she added. “It’s so blown out of proportion. My comment to him was that I found the video racist. I thought it depicted white men in a very ill manner. I just don’t know who that music is serving these days. I know it’s not a popular thing to say. I guess I’m just an older mother thinking, ‘Oh my god, really?’”
