Em Ce Haze, a member of the rap group Ill State, had just finished a set at the Looney Bin and was reportedly disrupting the show by grabbing audience members’ phones to record Carter’s performance, according to TMZ.
He was ejected for his behavior, which caused Carter, who was onstage at the time, to yell “Bye Felipe!” The quip was a play on the popular internet meme “Bye Felicia!” originally from the film “Friday.”
Haze said he found the joke offensive, as he and his bandmates were the only Hispanics in the room, so he returned to the room and attacked Carter from the audience, busting the singer open and sending him to the hospital.
Carter later took to Twitter to explain that police were investigating the incident, that his manager and ex-girlfriend are Mexican and that his face was “still pretty.”
