Adele Breaks Record At ANZ Stadium

Adele’s two shows at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium, March 10-11, set a record for concert attendance, with each night drawing 95,000, according to a post by the venue.

The shows were “two of the biggest events held at the stadium since the Sydney 2000 Olympics,” according to the post. Media reports put the figure at 95,544 for each of the nights.

Adele broke the 78,000 figure set by Taylor Swift at the venue in 2015.

With her in-the-round stage allowing 15,000-20,000 extra seating, the British singer had already staged the biggest ever single concert in Perth (65,000 at Domain Stadium) and Adelaide (60,000 at the Adelaide Oval), while her 120,000 draw over two nights at the Gabba in Brisbane was also acknowledged the biggest music event ever in that city, She has sold 154,000 tickets at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium March 18-19, beating multi-day runs by U2, AC/DC and Robbie Williams, and exceeding the single-day attendance of Green Day’s 75,438 on Dec. 17, 2005.

At the March 10 show, the singer surveyed the crowd and gasped, “Well, I’ve never seen a crowd this f**kin’ big, that’s for sure. Never, never,” according to news.com.au. 

She explained she could have played a greater number of smaller venues over a longer period to satisfy demand, but had to get back to London by April as her 4-year-old son Angelo was beginning school.

Adele already has the biggest concert shows in New Zealand. But on March 10, Live Nation released more tickets for each of her three days at Mt. Smart Stadium in Auckland March 23, March 25 and March 26.

According to LN, the removal of a temporary grandstand provided additional capacity. Adele was initially announced to play one show in New Zealand but its presales sold out in 15 minutes.

It went on to set new records, including the fastest selling tour, the most number of concerts at Mt. Smart, and the highest number of tickets sold in a day (100,000).
