Injury Waylays Matt And Kim Tour

Matt And Kim posted a vlog today titled “Part 2, What Happened To Kim” to share with fans exactly what happened to the drummer at a festival in Mexico two weeks ago, that forced the indie rock duo to cancel their scheduled dates and take the next nine months off.

“Part 1,” which was published earlier this week, included footage of the moment when Kim Schifino injured herself while running on stage to begin the band’s performance at “Festival Vaiven” in Morelos, Mexico.

“When Kim jumped there was a stage fan sitting on the floor that was not where it usually was. So she tried to avoid it by spreading her legs out,” vocalist/keyboardist Matt Johnson said. “The bottom half of her left went one way, the top half of her leg went the opposite way. So she tried to stand up and immediately collapsed down again, in just utter pain.”

With adrenaline going, Kim tried to stick it out and the duo was able to play four or five songs before the pain was too much and she had to be carried off stage.

The “Part 2” video doesn’t hold back, with footage of Kim in the ambulance and her time in the hospital, as well as the drummer dealing with nausea in reaction to the pain medication in her IV.

Kim explains her mishap on stage resulted in a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which will require surgery (including “physical therapy for six weeks before surgery to strengthen everything around it”), as well as recovery time and then more physical therapy.

“It’s just so crazy to think we’re not going to do a show for nine months,” Kim said. “We’ve never, even taken this much time off. This is why I’ve been so bummed out. And everyone’s comments on all our social media have been so ****ing awesome. And thank you guys for sending that. It cheers me up. Also, we’re also doing a thing, “hashtag dance for Kim” because I can’t dance at the end of these videos. Those have been pouring in and those are awesome.”

Matt added, “It’s a good thing Kim is the toughest person I know. She’s going in, she’s kicking ass at physical therapy already. You’re just going to recover faster than the biggest athlete.”

The duo had a handful of performances scheduled at universities this month, including an April 7 show at the University of Florida.
