Philly Met To Get $45M Revamp

Developer Eric Blumenfeld has announced an agreement with Live Nation to revive Philadelphia’s Metropolitan Opera House, confirming reports Pollstar covered in April.

The Metropolitan Opera House in Philadelphia is getting a $45 million renovation through a partnership with Live Nation and developer Eric Blumenfeld.

The theatre was built in 1908 and now lies in disrepair, taking up a full city block in Philadelphia. The renovation will cost $45 million, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, with a planned 2018 reopening.

Built in 1908 as movie theatre by Oscar Hammerstein, the building with its 4,000 seats was at one time the largest theatre of its kind in the world. It has also served as a circus venue, ballroom and church.

Blumenfeld’s EB RealtyGroup announced plans last May for a $35 million renovation to convert the building into a world-class concert venue.

A completion date hasn’t been announced.

Live Nation currently operates or manages several venues in the area including the  and .
