Islanders Eye Belmont Park

New York State released a list of proposals on redeveloping Elmont’s Belmont Park, paving the way for a potential new home for the NHL’s New York Islanders.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said the hockey team is participating in public discussion regarding the development of the park and called it a “terrific opportunity” to build a new arena, according to Newsday.

The Islanders are reportedly considering opting out of a 25-year deal to play at the Barclays Center.

The team, which is advised by the Oak View Group, already has renderings of a potential new arena at the park. The team is reportedly considering partnering with Sterling Project Development, majority owners of the MLB’s New York Mets, to develop the project.

A horse racing facility that hosts one leg of the Triple Crown currently stands of the park.

Development proposals are due by the end of September.
