More Than 300 Injured In Pier Collapse At O Marisquino Festival In Spain
Some 330 people were injured when a pier collapsed at Spanish festival O Marisquino in Vigo, Aug. 12.
The incident occurred during the performance of Mallorcan rapper Rels B on the last festival day. One witness told local media, “We were calm and the ground gave way, the concert had just started, we both fell into the water but managed to climb [out].”
“The floor went down like an elevator, it was a matter of five seconds. It broke and we all fell in. People were falling on me, I was having trouble getting out,” said another witness.
Authorities have confirmed, that a stretch of 30 meters of pier have collapsed, injuring a significant amount of people and leaving at least four in serious condition.
Firefighters and divers scanned the area with thermal cameras after the accident, reporting no fatalities. The injured were taken to local hospitals.
“O Marisquino Festival deeply regrets the accident of last night and expresses its solidarity with all the injured and their families, who are now the absolute priority for everyone,” the festival’s organizers said in a statement.
They explained that the area around the festival pier was now sealed while authorities established what caused the collapse.
“The concerts organized by O Marisquino met the security conditions required by law. We are available to the competent authorities for everything they may need,” the statement continues.
“O Marisquino wants to highlight the civility shown by the thousands of people who left the premises in an orderly manner and allowed the work of the rescue and security teams, who did a great job. We thank you publicly for your cooperation.”
