Imogen Heap announced plans Monday for her first U.S. tour since 2010 — and forward-thinking artist will push boundaries yet again during the stint.
The series of nine gigs, which hits cities including New York, Chicago and San Francisco between April and May 2019, will mark the launch of Creative Passport, the new initiative from Mycelia, the collaborative platform for musicians Heap founded earlier this decade. The stint comes as part of a larger initiative Heap plotted earlier this year to promote the technology.
Creative Passport utilizes blockchain technology to allow musicians unique profiles containing personal information about their work, according to a press release. It also streamlines payment exchanges to ease collaboration.
“For years now we’ve been complaining about the state of the music industry and how it has been held back by old ways of thinking, negatively impacting music makers – a major pain point being that we are the first to put in any of the work, and the last to see any financial reward or even payment,” Heap wrote in a statement. “Through Mycelia and its ‘Creative Passport,’ as music makers we now have no excuse but to put our best foot forward and become open for business, decentralizing the ecosystem so that it will ultimately benefit everyone.”
Events in the cities on the tour’s itinerary will feature Mycelia workshops, classes where children can learn about coding, and talks about how technology has shaped and will continue to shape the music business. Heap will also reunite with Guy Sigsworth to play their first shows as the duo Frou Frou since 2003.
Though Heap embarked on a brief European tour this fall, she’s rarely toured this decade. Her last American appearance was at the 2012 installment of South by Southwest, and her last proper U.S. tour was in spring 2010. She was a reliable draw: Her last American gig for which data is available, a headlining show at Los Angeles’ Greek Theater, sold 3,802 tickets for a gross of $108,113.
