AEG Pledges Net-Zero Emissions By 2050

Anschutz Entertainment Group, which includes concert promoter AEG Presents and venue operator AEG Facilities, has adopted a new greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. 

The pledge comes on Earth Day 2019 and is based on the 2018 “Global Warning of 1.5˚ C report from the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The announcement revises AEG’s previous 2.0˚-based 2020 goal to reduce emissions by 25% or approximately 3.2% per year between 2010 and 2020, and makes it one of the first companies to formally adopt the 1.5˚-based emissions target that recommends global emissions reduction 100% by 2050.

“We are committed to leading the way toward change and continuing to help draw attention to this serious issue by doing more to ensure the safety of our world,” said John Marler, AEG’s vice president of energy & environment. “Today’s announcement builds on that commitment to further drive improvements in our global operations wherever possible. Meeting our current 2020 GHG goal is critical as it reflects the level of reductions required to achieve this longer-term targets.”

Separately, AEG also announced the release of its 2019 Sustainability Report, which outlines the company’s corporate environmental sustainability activities under its AEG 1EARTH brand that is in its second decade of operation. That can be viewed here.

 “While we are pleased with the work we have done to date, we recognize that much more work needs to be done,” Marler added. “In addition to adopting our new 1.5˚ C target for GHG emissions, we continue to look for ways to reduce potable water at water-stressed sites by 4.4% per year and diverting 70% of waste from landfill across all AEG operations.” 

AEG Presents is the second-biggest concert promoter in the world and AEG’s facilities division owns or operates major venues including The O2 London arena, Sprint Center in Kansas City and Staples Center in Los Angeles.  Tours promoted by AEG Presents and subsidiaries or partners including Messina Touring Group and Concerts West include Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry and The Rolling Stones.
