While attending college, Karen Gault paid the bills by working at a music production company. She planned to use her degree to become a forest ranger, but her bosses at the time – GLS’s Gerry Stickells and Chris Lamb – noticed her organization skills and offered her a job on the road as a production coordinator. “The fast-paced, constantly changing dynamics of touring piqued my interest,” she says. “I love to put the pieces of the puzzle together in creative ways, try new food, experience different cultures, explore new countries and most of all, make friends with all the crazy characters that get into this business.”

Gault’s first “proper gig” as a tour manager was Paul McCartney in 2002. Lenny Kravitz has been her main client for the past seven and a half years; she’s also tour managed Jennifer Lopez, Sade, Tina Turner, B-52s, and Patty Griffin.

Recalling when she first got into the business, Gault says, “I was often one of the few women on the tour and although it’s still male dominated, there are a lot more women around these days. It’s fun to have that connection and to help mentor women out on tour.” She names security and safety as the biggest challenges of the job, explaining, “Every country and city presents unique challenges in these areas. It is something that is on my mind constantly.”
