Having interned for Liz Land at the Frank Erwin Center, working for concert legend Louis Messina was always a goal for Rachel Powers. Today, the Messina Touring Group’s Director of Marketing handles everything from targeting the tour announce to the onsale and straight through to the show for MTG mainstays Blake Shelton, Eric Church and Kelly Clarkson. Whether building and executing a national marketing plan, or getting in the trenches locally, Powers is talking with venue marketing people, local radio stations, creative directors over key decisions, even placing every single ad.
“In an era of information overload, it’s important to stand out when it comes to marketing initiatives and execution so it actually makes it to the fans. It has to be compelling enough to cut through and sell a ticket when there’s constant competition for ears and eyeballs.”
She’s doing something right. Shelton’s “2020 Friends & Heroes Tour,” her fourth with the hard country star/”Voice” judge, continues to grow his franchise. Always learning from Messina, Kate McMahon and Sara Winter, her favorite advice comes from McMahon, “Every mistake isn’t a life sentence. Learn from your mistakes, but don’t take yourself so seriously at every turn.”
