They ask that 2% of the national recovery budget of each member state is allocated to the cultural and creative sectors.

110 organizations from across the cultural and creative sectors in Europe have published a joint call on the EU and its member states to place culture at the core of each and every recovery plan.

These organizations, which by their own admission represent millions of European creators and cultural and creative businesses – ask that at the very least 2% of each national recovery budget is allocated to the cultural and creative sector – in line with the European Parliament’s recent call in its Resolution on the cultural recovery of Europe.
The “joint call” comes in the form of two open letters, one addressed to the European Commission, one addressed to the national government of each member state.
The co-signees of the letters ask that the EU Commission assess each member state’s national recovery plan for culture and distribute the money accordingly.
“It is our common duty to preserve culture in these challenging times, and we hope you will do everything possible to safeguard the diversity, vibrancy and richness of Europe,” one of the letter states.
According to the co-signees, “These letters come as Europe finds itself at the beginning of a second wave that will undoubtedly increase the impact of the pandemic crisis on the economy as a whole, and culture in particular.”
Cultural and creative sectors have been seriously impacted by the Cover crisis, with most cultural activities are being halted, millions of jobs frozen or wiped out, and businesses on the brink of bankruptcy.
The live events business is in danger of losing many talented professionals, who will be forced to leave the sector altogether in search of work.
“While some first steps have been taken to support the sector, much more is needed at EU and national level,” the letter’s signees conclude.
The letters to the EU and national governments, respectively can be read in full here and here.
