Pussy Riot Brings Multimedia Punk Protest ‘Riot Days’ To 22 North American Stages
Russian feminist protest collective Pussy Riot is bringing “Riot Days,” a multimedia punk rock protest extravaganza, to North American stages this fall, launching Nov. 1 at Rialto Theatre in Montreal, Quebec, and running through 22 shows culminating at Warsaw in Brooklyn, New York, on Dec. 8.
“Riot Days” is based on Maria “Masha” Alyokhina’s book of the same title that chronicled her experiences with the collective, from their protests to court trials and prison sentences in Russia. The content evolves, reflecting current events like political prosecutions and the Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Other stops on the itinerary include Magic Bag in Ferndale, Michigan; Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio; Gothic Theatre in Denver; El Corazon in Seattle, Washington; Roseland Theatre in Portland, Oregon; Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles; Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix, Arizona; Emo’s in Austin, Texas; Basement East in Nashville; 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C.; and Paradise Rock Club in Boston.
The current “Riot Days” Pussy Riot collective lineup includes Alyokhina, Diana Burkot, Olga Broisova and Alina Petrova, and is represented by Paladin Artists for booking.
Tickets are on sale now through the “Riot Days” tour website.
“Riot Days” is a story of resistance, repression and revolution in a mixture of concert, rally, theatre and political happening told with an innovative combination of live music, theatre and video. It’s toured worldwide, with more than 200 performances across most of Europe, the U.S., Brazil, Australia and New Zealand. The Pussy Riot collective has also opened shows with Avenged Sevenfold as well as headlined their own shows.
“Riot Days” has garnered prestigious awards like the Herald Angel Award, Total Theatre Award of Edinburgh Festivals, the annual anti-fascist award in Germany, the Woody Guthrie Prize in the US, and more. Just recently four ladies of Riot Days received honorary degrees of the Doctor of Letters of the University of Kent, and celebrated this with an impromptu performance in the historical Canterbury Cathedral.
The current Pussy Riot collective lineup includes Alyokhina, Diana Burkot, Olga Broisova and Alina Petrova.
Masha Alyokhina endured a year and a half under Russian detention and house arrest in 2021-22, for the collective’s public statement of support of political prisoners including Alexey Navalny. She managed to escape Russia in May 2022, disguised as a food courier. Russian President Vladimir Putin pronounced Alyokhina as one of the most wanted criminals in Russia.
Since her escape, Pussy Riot and “Riot Days” has been able to spread its message globally, particularly in support of Ukraine. A significant portion of the projects’ income goes to support Ukrainian Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital and foundation.
