The year of the dragon is in full swing, and Pulse Events are celebrating the Lunar New Year at Avant Gardner in Brooklyn, New York. Spring Festival: Lunar New Year Celebration features performances from SLANDER and Alan Walker for its second edition taking place Feb. 18 and 19.

“Last year was the first year we created Spring Festival,” festival founder and CEO of Pulse Events, Luffy Huang, tells Pollstar. “We try to put some Chinese culture and celebrations of Lunar New Year into the music.”

This year’s event stays true to traditional Lunar New Year celebrations, with Spring Festival featuring stations for red envelope activities and the traditional lottery. As a massive fan of dance music, Huang wanted to combine the two for a unique experience. He settled on Avant Gardner due to his pre-existing relationship with the team, and the venue’s fame as one of the foremost dance venues in the world. While the winter season means the venue’s Brooklyn Mirage stage with its massive screens is closed down until the summer, Pulse Events has access to the remaining rooms in the venue, including the Great Hall and Kings Hall.

“Avant Gardner is the best venue in the New York market,” Huang says. “We worked with them last year. Because the young EDM fans love the Avant Gardner, that’s why we wanted to go back. We can work together with them to bring more Asian people to their venue and have that EDM experience. I also hope we can let the fans see we represent the culture… The experience for fans is very important,” Huang says. “This time, we’re opening the Great Hall and Kings Hall, we take over two stages. Then they open the lounge space for us. We have a team to produce the night market at Avant Gardner. We’re bringing in lunar makeup and a fortune wall, so many special things in the show.”

Ahead of the sets, Pulse Events prepares a night market, encouraging fans to explore what else the show has to offer rather than just the artists.

Huang says he and the Avant Gardner team have found a good groove, the two collaborating on five events last year including a winter festival, full moon party, SLANDER show and more.

“They have a passion and the production team is so professional,” Huang says. “They’ll have many ideas when I pass some culture points to them. They will help me to create the production for fans, so I love it.”

Before starting Pulse Events and moving to the United States, Huang worked as a TV host in Hong Kong. He tried to work in the concert business while living in Hong Kong but found his passion after moving to the East Coast. He states that his aim with Pulse Events, and this weekend’s Lunar New Year celebration, is to create a bridge connecting Western and Eastern cultures.

For the Spring Festival, he promises some great surprises connecting dance music culture to the Lunar New Year celebrations, with lion dancing and more. In addition to headline sets by Alan Walker and SLANDER, fans can see performances by Trivecta, 4B, Henry Fong and more. Tickets for the show are now available.
