Producer Edgar Barrera, Superstars Bad Bunny & Karol G Top Latin Grammys Noms

The hits keep coming from Edgar Barrera, and so does the potential to add more awards to his ever-growing trophy mantle. The renowned Mexican American songwriter-producer tops the 2024 Latin Grammy nominations with nine nominations, and reggaeton standouts Bad Bunny and Karol G lead all performers with eight nominations each.

Barrera, who has won 21 Latin Grammys as well as one Grammy, is up the show’s top prizes, including Record of the Year, three nominations in the Song of the Year category, Songwriter of the Year and Producer of the Year.

One of Barrera’s nominations for Song of the Year is “Mi Ex Tenía Razón” with Karol G, who has had quite the year winning a Grammy Award earlier this year and recently concluding a massively success stadium tour. The Colombian singer is also vying for Album of the Year with Mañana Será Bonito (Bichota Season), Best Reggaeton Performance, Best Urban Music Album and Best Urban Song.

The release of Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana has Bad Bunny, the reggaeton superstar who held the touring record for total gross in a calendar year (before Taylor Swift surpassed him), up for the top Latin Grammy honors, including Record of the Year, Best Urban Music Album, Best Reggaeton Performance and Best Rap/Hip Hop Song.

The Latin Grammy Awards is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and continues to evolve in celebrating all styles of music by debuting a field (Electronic Music) and two categories: Best Latin Electronic Music Performance and Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album (Regional-Mexican Field).

“As we approach the 25th edition of the Latin Grammys our Awards Process is more robust than ever, with our membership evaluating over 23,000 entries this year,” Manuel Abud, CEO of The Latin Recording Academy, said in a release. “The Latin Grammys have grown in an amazing way to become a fundamental platform for music and culture. We are proud to share this year’s nominees, an international and diverse group of creators representing the richness and vastness of today’s Latin music.”

Among those nominated in the new electronic music category are Shakira and Bizarrap, Alok, Ale Costa, Valeria Castro and Vikina. The nominees for Best Contemporary Mexican Music Album are corridos tumbados godfather Natanael Cano, Peso Pluma, recent Pollstar cover artist Carin León, Grupo Frontera, Michelle Maciel and DannyLux.

Songwriter Kevyn Mauricio Cruz, known professionally as Keityn, received six nominations, and Legendary Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra earned five nods.

This year’s list of nominees certainly celebrates the diverse sounds within the broad Latin music genre with artists like Anitta, Camilo, Cimafunk, Monsieur Periné, Jorge Drexler, Fonseca, Grupo Niche, Mon Laferte, Kali Uchis and Peso Pluma nominated for Record of the Year. The same could be said about the Album of the Year category which features artists like Ángela Aguilar, Xande De Pilares, Shakira, Residente, Kany García and León as nominees.

The loaded Best New Artist category includes Agris, Kevin Aguilar, Darumas, Nicolle Horbath, Latin Mafia, Cacá Magalhães, Os Garotin, Iñigo Quintero, Sofi Saar and Ela Taubert as nominees.

The Latin Recording Academy announced the nominations Tuesday morning and will hold this year’s ceremony at Kaseya Center in Miami on Nov. 14.
