BY THE NUMBER: 24. sold-out Metallica Sphere shows.
FULL CIRCLE MOMENT: Managing Rush For “Fifty Something Tour” After signing them to first label deal in the ‘70s.
It’s maybe no surprise that longtime Metallica manager and Q Prime founder Cliff Burnstein isn’t too concerned about the rest of the industry when he’s got plenty on his own plate, and his artists seem to be doing just fine.
“It’s mostly hype,” says Burnstein of the so-called Blue Dot Fever of unsold concert tickets. “Maybe the concert industry has reason to be concerned, but certainly not Q Prime and our roster. Here, each artist is an industry unto themselves, outside of them there is no industry as far as we are concerned.”
There are no blue dots for Metallica’s upcoming “Life Burns Faster” residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, which sold out in minutes.
“The sheer enthusiasm of their fans never ceases to amaze me,” says Burnstein, who co-founded Q Prime with Peter Mensch in 1982. “Sphere is a venue unto itself, and I’m curious to see how the band will adapt their performance to such a visually focused venue.”
He notes recent highlights taking place on May 7, 2025, when Gillian Welch and David Rawlings played a second sold-out show at Carnegie Hall, the same day that Metallica’s thunderous presence not only broke an attendance record but registered on seismographs at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Another standout is client singer-songwriter Jesse Welles, who is continuing the American tradition of the protest song, “which I think a lot of people thought was falling out of our lexicon, but Jesse’s success has really proven to the contrary.”
“Also, putting together Rush’s ‘Fifty Something’ tour has been a full circle moment for me,” says Burnstein, who signed the band to Mercury Records, their first American label deal, in the ‘70s and was included in frontman Geddy Lee’s recent “My Effin’ Life” memoir. “It’s not something I would have predicted, but I’m incredibly proud to reunite with them for this journey. In a lot of ways, they were the start of my career, and it’s incredibly flattering for them to come back around after all those years and ask for our involvement.”
