Morrissey Blasts Royal ‘Benefit Scroungers’

While the many in the UK were gripped by the fervour being whipped up by the royal wedding, Morrissey showed he was less than enthusiastic about the event by telling BBC Radio 5Live that the royals are no more than “benefit scroungers.”

Just goes to show that the British will bet on anything, including exactly when Kate Middleton will show up to her own wedding April 29. Also on offer were how long the marriage will last and even who would be the first to cry at the ceremony. Our money’s on Charles.

The 51-year-old former The Smiths frontman told listeners that the lavish wedding parade that will pass through central London is something he can’t take seriously.

“I don’t think the so-called royal family speak for England now and I don’t think England needs them,” he told one of the station’s many phone-in programmes focusing on Prince William’s marriage to Kate Middleton April 29.

“I do seriously believe that they are benefit scroungers and nothing else. I don’t believe they have any purpose whatsoever,” he said.
