The Swamp Fox Cometh

The one and only Tony Joe White embarks on a tour next month, prowling East Coast and Midwest clubs with his own unique style of raw, unvarnished roots music.

White’s daughter has been known to introduce her father in concert, often proclaiming him “the coolest motherf***er in the world.” And those who have seen the “Swamp Fox” in action couldn’t agree more.

We don’t know if it’s White’s sub-basement baritone that endears him to fans or if it’s because he’s penned a remarkable collection of songs over the years, many of which were turned into hits by other singers. Artists that have recorded his songs include Elvis Presley, who recorded White’s “Polk Salad Annie.” Then there’s White’s emotional weather forecast known as “Rainy Night In Georgia,” which was covered by several artists, most notably Brook Benton and Ray Charles.

White won’t be touring empty-handed. His latest album, The Shine, drops Sept. 28 on Swamp Records.

The tour begins in Nashville at the Exit / In Sept. 24, plays Chattanooga’s Rhythm & Brews Sept. 29 and stops in Athens, Ga., at The Melting Point Sept. 30. Other stops include Atlanta, Louisville, Chicago, Akron, Pittsburgh, New York City, Philadelphia and Charlotte. Last stop on the schedule is Asheville, N.C., at The Grey Eagle Oct. 27.
