Alleged Weirdo Accused Of Stalking Ashanti & Her Mother
Devar Hurd, 31, is accused of calling Ashanti’s mother, Tina Douglas, numerous times in February and then sending her 32 messages between May 29 and July 18, according to the New York Daily News. Most of the messages were directed at the 29-year-old Grammy Award-winning singer/actress/record producer/model but a few seemed to be intended for Ashanti’s mother and sister, Kenashia.
“Hey Tina baby, how u doing sexy,” read a May 29 message, according to the New York Daily News. “Tell Shani I’m coming straight home from work to put in sum overtime. U know how I do, LOL.”
The next day he sent the following message: “Here’s a pic I had laying around for the ladies in sum of my birthday suit lol.”
In addition to sending photos of male genitals, writing about explicit sexual scenarios and lewd comments about Ashanti’s performances, Hurd also reportedly sent messages detailing his workouts, romantic dreams and even career advice. Career advice?! Wow. This guy is something else. He’s apparently the jealous-type as a few texts gave the impression that he wasn’t too pleased with Ashanti’s relationship with the rapper Nelly.
One message claimed that Hurd saw Ashanti’s car when he went to a performance of “The Wiz,” which the artist starred in an of-Broadway revival of this summer. Even creepier, one text included a photo of Ashanti’s mother’s house and asked about coming over for a visit.
According to court papers, in February Douglas told Hurd to stop contacting her after he called her repeatedly.
Hurd’s mother, Elvira Hurd, said she didn’t know how he could have gotten his hands on Douglas’ phone number.
“If he, in fact, sent the pictures maybe he was just caught up, like a lot of other young people his age, on the Internet,” Elvira Hurd told the New York Daily News. “I think it’s much to do about nothing.”
“As far as I know, he doesn’t know these people,” Hurd’s sister-in-law Kim Hurd said. “He’s not in the music business. He’s really a regular old person.”
Hurd is a gym worker and former janitor from Indiana, according to the Associate Press. The New York Daily News reported that Hurd earns his living selling cars, time shares and home alarm systems. This isn’t his first time in trouble with the law – he also has a 2001 marijuana bust on his record.
Hurd was arrested in July and is being held at New York’s Rikers Island jail on $50,000 bond. The court case could go to trial in Manhattan Supreme Court Dec. 14, according to New York Daily News. He is being charged with 28 misdemeanor counts of stalking and aggravated harassment and faces up to two years in prison if convicted. Hurd has pleaded not guilty.
