The Other Gallagher Says Oasis Is Over
The singer’s brother, lead guitarist Noel, quit Oasis in late August, minutes before the Britpop band was set to set to take the stage at Paris’ Rock En Seine Festival.
The Times reported that the breakup was spawned by a big fight backstage. Sources close to the band said that enough was enough for Noel after Liam picked up one of his brother’s guitars and smashed it on the floor.
A festival organizer broke the bad news to the waiting crowd, explaining that “the group no longer exists” and had canceled the remaining European tour dates.
Hours later Noel posted the following statement on the band’s Web site: “It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”
If Liam getting violent and Noel threatening to quit the band sounds like déjà vu to you, a similar situation occurred back in 1994. During the band’s first U.S. tour Liam hit Noel over the head with a tambourine on stage during a Los Angeles show and Noel subsequently threatened to throw in the towel.
Fans have held out hope the feuding brothers might be able to work out their differences and drama once again. There have also recently been rumors that Oasis would continue on without Noel.
In a recent interview with The Times, Liam reiterated that Oasis had played its last show.
“Well, Oasis is no longer. I think we all know that. So that’s done,” he said.
When asked if he truly meant it, Liam added, “Oh I know. Without a doubt.
“And it’s a shame but that’s life. We had a good run at it. The thing about Oasis is, no one … we ended Oasis. No one ended it for us. Which was pretty, kind of … cool. I’m thinking of what the next step is musically, which is all my mind’s on.”
Liam explains that the breakup isn’t such a bad thing because Noel can do his own thing and he can do his. He then hints that he might start another band, possibly with the former members of Oasis.
“People will be able to buy his records. People will be able to buy our records. So everyone’s happy.”
The Times asks if “Maybe, in time, the relationship (with Noel) will be different? And it won’t be all about the music and the management?”
Liam replies that down the road, there may still be hope for his relationship with his brother.
“Exactly! Exactly! Well, that’s a long way off yet, man, but who knows.”
Liam recently launched a clothing line of clothes and shoes called Pretty Green.
“I’m down with my feminine side, without a f***ing doubt. But I’m not a fashion designer. I’m not into the fashion side of it. I’m just into making top clobber that I like. You won’t see me at a f***ing fashion show.
He adds, “I just see myself as Liam Gallagher, musician, making some proper clothes for people who think like me.”
