Police Say No Go For Van Show
Organizer PHS Community Services Society, a local nonprofit that provides housing and support for those with substance abuse issues, reportedly set up tents and structures for the show without a permit Oct. 23.
“The city had declined a permit that was requested by the group,” Const. Jana McGuinness told CBC News. “The city is concerned that pedestrians or motorists may be unduly put at risk by the event.”
Officials for the nonprofit, however, said the group should have the right to support the Insite safe injection site with an event.
“It’s a demonstration,” PHS spokesman Mark Townsend told the CBC. “It’s what we’re allowed to do. We’re allowed to put up tents, and it’s all organized.”
Following the cancellation, the band gave a performance that evening at the city’s Commodore Ballroom.
