The Closing Bell 10/06
But before we go, we thought you might enjoy some campfire favorites like the tale of Oasis and Sir Cliff, the legacy of Roy Orbison (no, it’s not Foster Grants), another soulful import from the U.K., moving from the barroom to the courtroom, what John Lennon was really up to from 1973 – 1975 and what’s coming up on Jimmy Kimmel’s plate.
And as you drift off to sleep, we want to fill your head with soothing dreams about seeing Steve Forbert, The Hold Steady, Soulfly and The Killers perform live. (Okay, maybe that last one isn’t so soothing. Was that the sound of a hook hand scraping along the cabin walls?)
Overnight Sensation …
We’ve kidnapped a writer from another department and forced her to write these stories. If you don’t read them, we’ll make her to listen to our story about meeting Donny Osmond. Again. And you really don’t want that on your conscience do you?
Cake Or Death – Well, the story’s about The Sea & Cake actually, but we love the Eddie Izzard joke. Whatever the case, the band’s hitting the road in support of its latest.
At The Movies With Clare & the Reasons – The eclectic Brooklyn musical collective heads back to the States at the end of the month.
Link-O-Rama …
If you’re gonna rip somebody off musically, shouldn’t it be someone a little hipper than Cliff Richard? – Guardian U.K.
Johnny Cash wasn’t the only man in black to catch the world’s ear and Roy Orbison’s got a new box set to prove it – Associated Press via Detroit Free Press
British singer/songwriter Adele might soon have U.S. audiences asking, “Amy who?” But don’t take our word for it. Listen for yourself – NPR Online
Charlie Pickett traded his guitar for a briefcase and a law degree. Insert lawyer joke here – South Florida Sun-Sentinel
John Lennon’s one-time girlfriend, May Pang, wants to set the record straight on the late musician’s “lost weekend” – San Diego Union-Tribune
Dates, Dates & More Dates …
Touring stalwart Steve Forbert continues to fill in his calendar through early 2009. Just added destinations include Hamilton, Ontario; Philadelphia; Albany, N.Y.; Providence, R.I.; and Teaneck, N.J.
Some people say The Hold Steady is the best thing since The Band. Folks in the U.K. can judge for themselves in December, when the group hits Sheffield, Oxford, Nottingham, Manchester, Bristol, Portsmouth, Wolverhampton and London.
Septegenarian presidential candidates aren’t the only thing to come from Arizona. Heavy metal rockers Soulfly are hitting the trail next month, with recently revealed stops in McAllen, Texas; Hammond, La.; Atlanta and New Port Richey, Fla.
Look out Britain, there’s a killer headed your way! Well, The Killers are actually. And to be honest they’re pretty harmless. Although Brandon Flowers can wield a mean quip. Cities in the band’s sights include Belfast, London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Sheffield, Nottingham, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Newcastle upon Tyne, Manchester and Dublin, Ireland.
Well campers, it’s time for lights out. We’ve had a busy day though haven’t we?
We updated schedules for Depeche Mode, Jon McLaughlin, Matt White, Shemekia Copeland, Tesla, Enter The Haggis, Judas Priest, The Nadas, The Offspring, Toad The Wet Sprocket, The Gutter Twins, The Bellamy Brothers, Gin Blossoms, Tuck & Patti and lots, lots more.
Yet we still found time to weave a nifty basket to bring home for mom to keep her buttons in.
Now everyone tuck in and sleep tight. And no midnight raids on the counselors’ cabin. We’re old. We need our sleep. (Plus we don’t want to have to explain some of the things you might see)
See you tomorrow for another day of musical adventuring!
