McCartney Cancels Australian Show
LONDON (AP) – Paul McCartney is calling off his only Australia show out of respect for those killed in the Bali nightclub bombing. McCartney was to play in Melbourne on November 23. He says it’s not the appropriate time for a rock show there and his sympathies go out to the victims and their families. McCartney says he hopes to do a show there “in time.” The bombing on October 12 in Bali killed more than 190 people and injured 300 others.
Meanwhile, McCartney has jumped into the Oregon food fight. Voters in Oregon will decide on Measure 27, which would require labeling of genetically modified foods. McCartney has recorded a radio ad in favor of the measure. He heard about the issue when his tour stopped in Portland and he called Mel Bankoff, who’s active in the campaign. Bankoff thought someone was pulling a prank on him, but it was McCartney offering his help. Bankoff says McCartney agreed to cut a radio ad supporting the measure.
Pat McCormick, a spokesman for the campaign opposing the measure, says McCartney is a “great musician” but he says the ad won’t change Oregon voters minds much.
