SM Joins Baljunso

In an effort to promote Korea’s indie rock and pop market, SM Entertainment, one of South Korea’s biggest talent agencies and music production companies, has invested in the indie label Baljunso.

SM announced Feb. 26 it acquired shares in the label with the intention of launching a subsidiary label that will globally promote some of Korea’s lesser-known acts.

Baljunso President Kan Byung-yong explained that “SM Entertainment, which plays a leading role in Hallyu [Korean] culture, has invested in our company for the sake of K-pop’s diversity and globalization. As a subsidiary label, we established a firm cooperative relationship for global distribution, marketing and additional business. We are trying to shed new light on and revive the hip-hop and band music of non-mainstream K-pop.”

The first project of the partnership will be the Baljunso worldwide promotion campaign, which will kick off with an event in Seoul’s Hongdae district, generally though to be the center of Korea’s cutting-edge indie culture. Seven related acts will perform on March 8.

The event will be live-streamed via SM’s official YouTube channel and other streaming services.
